Upgrade Your Flight Without Breaking Your Wallet – Traveling Internationally

How many of us are love to travel in luxury but on economy wallets? Well, here are a few tips to get your flights upgraded and travel in style internationally. Traveling overseas is becoming more affordable; however, going in style might cost you a good penny. A South African flight to Johannesburg is generally $750 from Washington DC round trip, while business class is a $6,200 round trip. Business-class on United going to Tokyo is approximately $11,000 round trip while the economy is a $2000 round trip from Washington DC.

If you are thinking about upgrading, you want to remember a few things. First, make sure you book with the airline, or if you are using a travel agent, make sure the ticket has no restriction. When booking with sites like booking.com you could lose the option to upgrade. It would be best if you looked at the fine print because you are getting the lowest fair; you may not have options. Other things to consider if your travel is a mixed flight, meaning you fly on one airline and transfer to another airline for another leg. Then, the business upgrade would not apply to the entire trip.

How does it work

Companies like South African Air has a biding process for upgrades. You have a minimum bid, my option was $600, and you can bid as much as you want and it is a for a one-way upgrade. Other airlines work similarly to United with a set upgrade rate on the day of your flight or the day before. Rember when I talked about restrictions, this is where it is important not to ensure that your trip does not have limits. I have seen the upgrades at this point between $1,000 – $1,500. Therefore, your savings can reach a much as $4,250 round trip the South African airline example or $7,000 round trip with the United Example.

What value do you gain from business or first-class travel? If you are traveling business class, you go through the business class entrance. You save your time, and the hassle of taking off your shoes, oh did I say waiting in line. You have access to the business class lounge, where they offer you free food and drinks. The lounge also offers comfortable places to sit, showers, shopping, and more. Your bags have priority, and they will come out of the conveyor belt. But more importantly, you are on and off the plane first with good food and drink throughout the flight — besides, a comfortable place to lay down and go to sleep through your trip. Therefore, the value is in your time, comfort, and experience.

This strategy is also suitable for flying domestic. Also, if you apply to airline rewards programs, you can get offers for discounted flights, free upgrades, and free trips with enough points. I hope this helps you travel in style without breaking the bank.
