When I visit new countries, I approach the situation with no expectations and an open mind. Zimbabwe is a country for nature lovers. I had the opportunity to visit Victoria Falls. The length of the falls was extraordinary. I posted pictures of the falls, but it does not compare to Niagara Falls. During this visit, it was the second year of the drought when you compare it to other waterfalls it is still magnificent. I would encourage people to visit during the rainy season, which is between November and April. Please note, Zimbabwe is in the second year of a drought.
From the city perspective, it is a small quiet town. The city of Victoria Falls’ economic base is tourism. You have an opportunity for many Western comforts. However, just a few meters off the main road, you will find places like Beer-Bab, a local woman-owned brewery. Caroline is the owner of this brewery and prides herself on making great beer. When you arrive, you will feel the great vibes, excellent music, and dancing. I didn’t get to see the elephants. However, I was told that the elephants are often seen eating on the bushes around her business and sleeping nearby.
Visiting Victoria Falls also gives you to travel to Botswana and Zambia. Botswana is home to Chobe National Park, which is home to one of the largest game concentration in Africa. You can get whisked away for a day’s journey to see and experience the beauty of the wildlife of Africa. Also, approximately 30 min away, you can travel to the town of Livingston, Zambia. It is a small town with shops and local eatery to enjoy. Going through customs might take a little time, so pack your patience.
What should you be concerned with? I’m glad you asked. Victoria Fall is a tourist town with touristic prices. Now compared to palaces that you will travel in the United States, it is still a deal to travel here. You can walk anywhere you want to go, so be careful paying $5 to go two blocks. WiFi is king, so while you are here, you are operating on 2G and 3G, so a good WiFi connection is helpful. Most restaurants will allow you to use their WiFi, so ask and you will receive. There are options for friendly and reasonably priced hotels. However, this could be a backpacker’s dream. The majority of cities and locations took American currency, but make sure you have small bills.
I saved this for last, but maybe it should have been first, the people and very friendly and helpful. I have felt so comfortable and so relaxed around the people here in Zimbabwe. Just the beauty of the country and the warm nature of its people make it a place I would want to visit again. And the values for your money makes it the right vacation destination.
