Ghana

This is The Year of the Return for African Diaspora and how better to celebrate but to return to the place we were taking from over 400 years ago. I just didn’t want to run over there and say I’m here, so I started out by taking a DNA test on ancestry.com. At first I was excited when I received the results, Cameroon! That is where I’m from, any to find out there is questions about the sample size ancestry.com has to compare our DNA. It was enough to get me started and excited about this journey.

The Year of Return in Ghana has been marked by different festivals and cultural events to make the heritage, diversity, and contributions to societies Africans have made around the world. I wanted to see Africa and the starting place to may African journey would be Ghana. I decided to visit the western region of Ghana which spreads from the Ivory Coast to the Central region. This areas has long coastlines and beautiful beaches. I stayed in the city known as Axim. If you are visiting Ghana you will be drawn into that warm sense of hospitality. This moment was tied together by a comforting helping of fish soup, shared among friends and one visitor, and playing Draught (American Checkers), overlooking the beautiful ocean view.

However, it is a sobering moment when you stand in the cells of the castles that over look this beautiful oceans and know that this is where your ancestors lives were changed for ever. But also the will to live and fight! Knowing the cells were cramped with little to no sunlight in areas. The smell of death and feces surrounding you with little to nothing to eat, waiting on a ship, never to return to the life as you know it. It is an estimated 12 million to 12.8 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic over 400 years and approximately 10 million arriving to the America’s and West Indies.

This would not be the end our destiny, however there would mean many generations of suffering with remnants of the impact slavery and policies that followed still plague our society.

I as sit outside and reflect on this trip I truly enjoyed the food, the people, and the history of this nation. But I also see that future opportunities abound for infrastructure projects and other business developments. Ghana works closely with UK, the USA, Germany, Denmark, Japan, and Netherlands on programs and projects. However, China has an eye on infrastructure development and other projects. While visiting you can see the improvements and project along the way, however Accra has the best infrastructure compared to other parts of the country. As I continue to make my way though the world, Ghana will always have a special place in my heart. It is the first African country I visited and the people were warm and amazing. When I return I will to see the difference in style, culture, and heritage.
