On the flight back from Zimbabwe, I met this couple that just returned from Ghana. The exciting thing is they were on the same plane I was on the way over to Zimbabwe. We reminisced about that flight over and the crew difference and our experiences by in Ghana and South Africa. During their South African trip, they stayed in Cape Town while stayed in Soweto and visited Johannesburg. During my Ghana trip, I was in Axim while they were in Accra.
I realized at that moment; I’m more of an adventure traveler. Through my business, I would not offer my style of travel unless they asked. I would relate it to traveling to Washington D.C verse visiting Savanah, GA, or the coast of Maine verse Miami Beach. You will get a different experience and appreciation for the people.
Now there are some pros and cons. You might not find the four-star Marriott and a luxury resort, but you will find the local brand of excellence, comfortable, and affordable lodging. You do get away from the weight of tourism and people trying to sell you something because they see you are a tourist. I would not say it is more dangerous just more unknown of what is considered the well know travel destination. What is my advice- 1) travel to places you are comfortable. Just like any state in America, there are hidden gems everywhere. 2) it is always great to have a guide. There are local companies that are willing to provide tours at a reasonable price. 3) don’t be afraid to be a little adventurous, let will always work out in the end 4) There will be ups and downs, to adventure travel and area where tourism areas provide is consistency in your travel experience. It does come down to comfort level and the experience you want to create. The most important thing is to travel often and experience the world.
